If you are looking for Egyptian marble exporters, granite processors, tile makers or cement suppliers, you are shopping in the country's biggest export category. Egypt's building materials sector exported $14.9 billion in 2025, up 36% on 2024, and accounted for around 30% of all non-oil exports2. This guide explains what sits inside that headline number, where the stone and ceramics actually come from, and how a foreign buyer can check a supplier before placing an order.
What the $14.9bn figure includes
The number is reported by the Export Council for Building Materials, Refractory and Metallurgical Industries, and it covers far more than stone and tiles2. It reached $14.875bn in 2025 against $10.872bn in 2024, and a further $4.803bn in the first five months of 20262. National trade data put the category at $14.880bn out of total non-oil exports of $48.567bn1.
Buyers should read the headline carefully. The top destinations reported for 2025 were the UAE, Switzerland and Libya, out of more than 160 markets3. Switzerland and the UAE are gold-trading hubs, and the same national breakdown lists gold at about $7.6bn in 20251. A large part of the headline is therefore likely to be precious metals and metallurgical products, not marble or ceramics. That matters if you are judging the depth of the supply base for a specific product.
| Segment | Latest reported figure | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Building materials, refractories & metallurgy (total) | $14.875bn in 2025, +36% | Council total2 |
| Iron and steel | $1.82bn in 2025, −18% | Türkiye the largest buyer at $274.5m3 |
| Cement and clinker | $837.3m in 2025, −8% | Libya the largest market at $146.4m3 |
| Marble and granite | $60.9m in Q1 2026, −23% y/y | Target of $1bn a year by end-202645 |
Egyptian marble and granite: where it comes from
Egyptian natural stone is sold worldwide, mostly in beige and cream marble and in granite. The supply chain has three main nodes57:
- Quarries in the Eastern Desert and along the Red Sea, including Jabal El Galala near Suez, Ras Ghareb, Ain Sukhna, Minya and Aswan7.
- Shaq El-Thu'ban, south of Cairo, the main cutting and finishing cluster. It covers about 6.5 million square metres and hosts around 2,525 factories and workshops7. Industry reporting ranks it among the largest marble industrial zones in the world5.
- Aswan for granite extraction, and Galala as a newer processing and export hub with modern equipment5.
The government's stated aim is to move the industry from small informal workshops to an organised network that sells finished products rather than raw blocks to Gulf, European and African buyers5. Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem announced a plan to double exports towards $1 billion a year by the end of 2026, including more active quarries and 18 new weighbridges4.
The current figures show how far there is to go. Marble and granite exports were $198m in the first five months of 2024, with 719,659 tonnes shipped to 115 countries6. The five largest buyers in that period were Libya, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Palestine and Kuwait, together worth 66.3% of the total6. In the first quarter of 2026, exports fell 23% year on year to $60.9m5. For a buyer, this means capacity exists, but the regional Arab market dominates. European and North American importers usually need to specify finishing, calibration and packing standards in detail.
Blocks, slabs or cut-to-size?
- Blocks suit buyers with their own processing plants. Ask for quarry origin and block dimensions.
- Slabs (polished, honed or brushed) are the main product from Shaq El-Thu'ban. Check thickness tolerance and resin or mesh backing.
- Cut-to-size and project work (tiles, steps, sills, vanity tops) carry the highest value. They need shop drawings and a clear quality plan.
Ceramics, cement and steel: the other half of the sector
Egypt also exports ceramic tiles, sanitaryware, glass, cement, rebar and other steel products. Two points stand out for 2025:
- Cement and clinker exports fell 8% to $837.3m, with Libya the largest market3. Cement is bulky and low in value, so freight decides most deals. Nearby Mediterranean, Red Sea and African ports are the natural markets.
- Iron and steel exports fell 18% to $1.82bn3.
If you import into the European Union, note that cement, iron and steel, and aluminium are covered by the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Its definitive phase began on 1 January 2026. EU importers must be authorised, report embedded emissions, and buy and surrender CBAM certificates8. Ask Egyptian cement and steel suppliers early for verified emissions data per tonne. Without it, your landed cost is uncertain. Marble, granite and ceramic tiles are not on the CBAM list8.
How to vet an Egyptian building materials supplier
A good supplier relationship starts with the right questions. A short checklist:
- Origin and grading. Ask which quarry the stone comes from and how the factory grades colour, veining and defects. Ask for photos of the full production batch, not one showroom slab.
- Technical data. Request test reports for density, water absorption, flexural strength and, for exterior use, frost resistance. Tile and sanitaryware buyers should ask which product standard the factory tests to.
- Capacity and lead time. Separate the factory's own cutting lines from subcontracted work. Many Shaq El-Thu'ban workshops are small, and large projects are often split across several workshops.
- Packing and loading. Specify fumigated wooden crates or A-frames, edge protection and container weight limits. Stone containers reach weight limits long before volume limits.
- Pre-shipment inspection. For a first order, appoint an independent inspector to check dimensions, finish and packing before loading.
- Payment terms. A small trial order on documentary terms is common before moving to open account.

How Egypt Rise helps buyers and producers
Egypt Rise is a free bilingual B2B platform. Factories publish an export catalogue with HS codes, minimum order quantities, capacity, certificates and Incoterms. Buyers can browse Egyptian products by category and open manufacturer profiles to contact suppliers directly, with no commission. For context on the wider export picture, read our overview of Egypt's non-oil exports in 2026.
Marble workshops, tile plants and cement producers can create a free business portal and list products in both Arabic and English, which makes them easier to find for importers who search in English.
Frequently asked questions
Is Egypt a major marble exporter?
Egypt has a large marble and granite industry, centred on Shaq El-Thu'ban near Cairo with quarries in Galala, the Red Sea area, Minya and Aswan7. Export value is still modest. Marble and granite exports were $60.9m in the first quarter of 2026, and the government is targeting $1bn a year45.
Which countries buy the most Egyptian marble and granite?
In early 2024 the five largest buyers were Libya, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Palestine and Kuwait, together worth about two-thirds of the value6.
Does CBAM apply to Egyptian building materials?
It applies to cement, iron and steel, and aluminium imported into the EU, with the definitive phase in force since 1 January 2026. Natural stone and ceramic tiles are not on the CBAM sector list8.
Why is the building materials export figure so large?
The $14.9bn total for 2025 covers building materials, refractories and metallurgical products2. Its top destinations include Switzerland and the UAE3, and national data list gold exports of about $7.6bn1. Stone and ceramics make up a much smaller share.
