Ask an Egyptian where furniture is made and the answer is almost always Damietta. For foreign buyers looking for Egyptian furniture manufacturers, the governorate on the Mediterranean coast is the natural starting point. Egypt exported $427 million of furniture in 2025, plus $638m of furnishings1, and furniture exports grew a further 5% in the first half of 2026, according to the Furniture Export Council2. This guide explains how the Damietta cluster works, what has changed with Damietta Furniture City, and what you should check before you place an order.

Why Damietta?

Damietta's furniture trade grew out of generations of family workshops, and it still dominates the industry. A 2015 industry profile estimated that Damietta produced about 80% of Egypt's furniture, with around 100 large factories, roughly 70,000 small workshops (about 20,000 of them registered) and some 400,000 people employed in the trade6. Earlier, in 2016, the trade minister said the governorate accounted for 65% of Egypt's furniture exports7. These figures are dated, so treat them as an order of magnitude rather than a current count, but they show the scale of the cluster.

The same 2015 profile noted that the industry imported 99% of its raw materials, mainly timber, veneers and hardware6. That fact still shapes pricing today: Egyptian furniture costs move with imported wood prices and the exchange rate.

What Damietta makes

Buyers will find a wide range:

  • Classic and carved furniture. Hand-carved French and "Louis" styles, gilded finishes and upholstered salon sets, the traditional strength of the cluster.
  • Modern and contract furniture. Panel-based bedrooms, dining sets and hotel furniture made on CNC lines.
  • Doors and joinery. Interior and armoured doors are a growing export line. One Damietta door maker visited by the industry minister in August 2026 has capacity for 100,000 doors a year and exports a quarter of its output to Saudi Arabia and Iraq5.

Damietta Furniture City

To move the industry from scattered home workshops to modern, export-ready production, the state built Damietta Furniture City in Shata, at the junction of the international coastal road and the Port Said–Damietta road. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated it in December 20193.

In August 2026, Industry Minister Khaled Hashem described the city as "the Middle East's first and largest specialised industrial zone for furniture." Six furniture plants he visited employ more than 1,300 people and export to the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the United States5.

For a buyer, the city matters because factories there have formal premises, modern machinery and access to a free zone. That makes compliance audits and consolidated shipping easier than with a scattered network of home workshops.

The industry's growth is steady rather than explosive. Furniture exports of $427m in 2025 are small next to Egypt's $48.567bn of non-oil exports1. The Furniture Export Council described the 5% growth in the first half of 2026 as acceptable given regional economic pressures, and it continues to promote the sector at international trade fairs2.

Damietta producers sell to Gulf and Arab markets, Europe, Africa and the United States5. The Port of Damietta and the free zone in Furniture City shorten the route to the Mediterranean.

EU buyers: the deforestation regulation

If you import wooden furniture into the European Union, the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) applies. Furniture is listed among the products covered, and operators must prove that the wood does not come from recently deforested land, using due diligence and geolocation data8. After the 2024–2025 amendments, the rules apply to large and medium operators from 30 December 2026 and to micro and small operators from 30 June 20278.

Because Damietta workshops depend on imported timber, the Egyptian maker usually cannot trace the wood on its own. Ask your supplier for:

  1. The name and country of the timber supplier and the species used.
  2. Purchase invoices and any certification from the original sawmill.
  3. Geolocation or plot data for the harvest, where the timber supplier can provide it.

Start this conversation now, because the obligations fall on the EU importer.

Buyer checklist for Egyptian furniture

  • Visit or video-audit the workshop. Confirm whether the supplier makes the product or subcontracts parts such as carving, upholstery or finishing.
  • Fix the specification. Wood species, moisture content, board type, finish system, fabric code and hardware brand all belong in the contract.
  • Check packing. Knock-down versus assembled, carton strength and corner protection decide damage rates on long sea routes.
  • Inspect before shipment. Use an independent inspector on the first orders.
  • Agree payment by milestone, for example a deposit, a payment at inspection and the balance against documents.
  • Protect your designs. If you send your own drawings, sign a short confidentiality and design-ownership agreement, and agree whether the workshop may sell the same model to others.
  • Watch the timber cost clause. Because most wood is imported, ask how long the quoted price is valid and whether it is linked to timber prices or the exchange rate.
  • Plan for mixed containers. Smaller buyers often combine items from several workshops in one container. Agree who consolidates, who checks each supplier's goods, and who is responsible for damage at loading.

How Egypt Rise helps

Egypt Rise is a free bilingual B2B platform. Furniture factories and workshops can publish an export catalogue with HS codes, minimum order quantities, monthly capacity, certificates and Incoterms. Buyers can browse Egyptian manufacturers and products and contact them directly, with no commission. Small carving, inlay and upholstery workshops also appear under handicraft producers. To learn more about the region, see our guide to Egypt's governorates. Damietta workshops can register a free business portal to present their work in English.
