Gulf and Asian importers who search for halal food suppliers in Egypt usually find plenty of options — Egypt is a Muslim-majority country and the Arab world is its largest market for processed food. Arab countries took around 48% of Egypt's food industry exports in 2025, a year in which those exports reached a record of nearly $7 billion1. But "made in a Muslim country" is not the same as "certified halal". Most Gulf and Southeast Asian markets now want a certificate from a body that their regulator recognises.

This guide explains how halal certification works for food sourced from Egypt, clears up a common confusion about IS EG Halal, and summarises what the main importing markets ask for.

Why Egypt is a natural halal sourcing base

Egypt's processed food sector is large, export-oriented and already shaped by Arab demand. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, Arab countries bought $1.893 billion of Egyptian food products, 47% of the total2. Product lines most relevant to halal buyers include:

  • Fruit and vegetables: citrus, potatoes, grapes, mangoes, garlic and frozen strawberries1.
  • Processed foods: pasta, tahini products, herbs and spices1, plus confectionery, juices and edible oils.
  • Frozen vegetables: okra, molokhia, peas and mixed vegetables — see our guide to Egyptian frozen vegetables.
  • Dairy and poultry — see our Arabic guides to dairy exports and poultry and eggs.

For plant-based foods the halal risk is mainly in additives, flavourings, processing aids, alcohol-based extracts and cross-contamination. For meat, poultry and gelatine-containing products, slaughter and ingredient sourcing are central, and certification is essential.

Egypt's own halal framework

Egypt has built a national halal framework in recent years:

  • National standard. In 2023 the Egyptian Organization for Standardization issued ES 429/2023, "General Requirements on Halal Food According to Islamic Shariya", covering compliance at all stages of food production3.
  • Registration of certification bodies. The General Organization for Veterinary Services (GOVS) issued Decision No. 1 of 2023, setting procedures for companies that provide halal certification in Egypt; it was published in the official gazette4.

What about IS EG Halal?

IS EG Halal is often mentioned in searches, but it matters mainly for goods coming into Egypt. In 2024 the EU raised concerns at the WTO that Egypt required halal certification of imported meat, poultry and dairy under the supervision of IS EG Halal, described as a state company based in Egypt5. Egypt replied that a customs circular on halal certification applied to meat and poultry, and that GOVS Decision No. 1/2023 remained unmodified5. For dairy, Egypt later withdrew its planned halal certificate requirement altogether, notifying the WTO in March 20256.

For a foreign buyer of Egyptian products, IS EG Halal is not the relevant gate. What matters is whether your Egyptian supplier's halal certificate is accepted by your country's authority. We could not find an official source confirming any change to IS EG Halal's import role after 2025, so check the current position with GOVS if you also export into Egypt.

What the main importing markets require

Each market runs its own recognition system. The table gives a starting point; always confirm the current list of recognised certification bodies with the regulator.

Indonesia: deadlines are close

Indonesia deserves special attention in late 2026. The mandatory halal deadline for imported food, beverages and slaughter products was extended from October 2024 to 17 October 20269. Foreign halal certificates can be registered through the SIHALAL system only if the issuing body has a mutual recognition agreement with BPJPH; 89 foreign institutions had such agreements as of September 20259. Registration needs, among other documents, the product HS code and an apostilled foreign halal certificate, and can take up to 20 working days9. A further requirement for halal product assurance for each shipment of halal-certified products was reported to apply from 9 September 2026, and non-halal products need clear labelling10.

If your Egyptian supplier's certifier is not on the BPJPH list, plan the switch now.

A buyer's checklist for halal sourcing from Egypt

  1. Get the certificate and the scope. Check the product names, the plant address and the expiry date. A certificate for one factory or product does not cover another.
  2. Verify the certifier, not just the logo. Confirm that the certification body is registered or recognised by your market's regulator (MoIAT, SFDA, BPJPH or other)79.
  3. Check ingredients and suppliers. Ask for halal status of flavourings, emulsifiers, enzymes, gelatine and processing aids.
  4. Look at segregation. If the plant also handles non-halal materials for other markets, ask how lines, storage and cleaning are separated.
  5. Align the label. Agree who supplies the halal logo artwork, registration numbers and language requirements.
  6. Keep the certificate live. Put renewal dates in the contract and ask for the updated certificate before each new season.

A food safety system (ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, BRCGS or IFS) is separate from halal and usually required as well. Our Arabic guide to export certificates explains how these fit together on the supplier side.

How Egypt Rise helps

Egypt Rise is a free B2B platform where Egyptian producers list export catalogues with HS codes, MOQ, capacity, certificates and Incoterms. You can browse food products, filter factories, poultry producers and dairy plants, and message suppliers directly with no commission. Ask each one to upload its halal certificate and certifier details to the profile, so you can verify them before the first call.

Yes. The Egyptian Organization for Standardization issued ES 429/2023 on general requirements for halal food3.

What is IS EG Halal?
