Egyptian frozen vegetables have become a steady line in the shopping lists of importers from Russia to the Gulf and North America. According to the Food Export Council, citing GOEIC trade data, Egypt held its place in 2024 as the world's fourth-largest exporter of frozen vegetables (uncooked or cooked by steaming or boiling), with a 7% global market share1. For buyers, that means a mature base of freezing plants, year-round raw material, and short shipping routes to Europe and the Middle East.
This guide covers what Egypt exports, the standards that matter, and how to choose an IQF (individually quick frozen) supplier.
The market in numbers
Egypt's frozen vegetable trade sits inside a fast-growing processed food sector. Food industry exports reached nearly $7 billion in 2025, up 12% on 2024, and Arab countries took around 48% of them3.
For the frozen vegetable category tracked by the Food Export Council, the 2024 figures were1:
| Indicator (2024) | Value |
|---|---|
| Export value | $74 million |
| Export volume | 73,000 tonnes |
| Growth in value, 2023–2024 | 15% |
| Global market share | 7% (4th worldwide) |
The top five destinations took more than half of shipments1:
| Market | 2024 value |
|---|---|
| Russia | $11.6 million |
| United States | $7.2 million |
| Palestine | $7.1 million |
| Saudi Arabia | $6.3 million |
| UAE | $5.3 million |
The Gulf is a growth story. Egypt's processed food exports to the UAE passed $215 million in January–November 2025, and frozen vegetables and frozen potatoes were among the leading products4. For the US, Egyptian food exports overall grew 47% in the first seven months of 20252.
Note that these figures cover one HS category. Frozen potato products and frozen fruit — above all frozen strawberries, which reached $517 million in the first seven months of 20252 — are tracked separately. For strawberries, see our dedicated guide to frozen strawberries from Egypt.
What Egypt exports: the IQF product range
Egyptian freezers typically offer a mix of global staples and "ethnic" vegetables that few other origins supply at scale. A single mid-sized plant may run around 20 frozen fruits and vegetables; one Alexandria-based exporter lists artichoke quarters and bottoms, okra, molokhia, cauliflower, broccoli and strawberries among its most popular lines, shipped to Europe, Canada, the US, the Far East, North Africa and Russia6.
Signature Egyptian lines
- Okra (bamia) — whole, in size grades such as "zero" and extra-fine; strong demand from Arab and diaspora markets.
- Molokhia (jute mallow) — chopped or whole leaves. Egyptian exporters ship it fresh, dried or frozen to markets including Belgium, the UK, Germany and Arab countries, and the main growing season runs from June to October7.
- Artichoke — hearts, quarters and bottoms6.
- Taro (colocasia), vine leaves and broad beans — niche but steady items for Middle Eastern cuisine.
Global staples
- Green peas, green beans, carrots, sweetcorn, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower, and mixed vegetables.
Because Egypt has several growing seasons, many plants freeze different crops in sequence through the year. Ask each supplier for a crop calendar showing when each item is packed: fresh-season product usually gives the best colour and texture.
Standards your specification should reference
The international baseline is the Codex Standard for Quick Frozen Vegetables (CXS 320-2015), adopted in 2015 and revised in 2017 and 20205. Its key requirements:
- Quick freezing must pass through the temperature range of maximum crystallisation quickly, and the product is not considered quick frozen until its thermal centre reaches -18°C after stabilisation5.
- The product must be kept at -18°C or colder at all points in the cold chain, within permitted tolerances5.
- Annexes give specific rules for carrots, corn, leeks, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, French fries, green and wax beans, peas and spinach5.
Okra, molokhia and artichoke are not covered by a Codex annex, so your own specification has to define them: size grade or cut, colour, maximum defects (blemishes, foreign vegetable matter, stems), glaze limits and pack weights.
Food safety and residues. EU buyers should know that Egyptian strawberries were added to the EU list of foods under increased official controls for pesticide residues, alongside Egyptian oranges and lemons; frozen vegetables were not among the Egyptian entries in the January 2026 update8. That list is reviewed regularly, so check it before each season and ask for residue reports in any case.
A buyer's checklist for Egyptian IQF suppliers
| Area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Food safety certification | BRCGS, IFS, FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000; HACCP plan; for Gulf and Asian buyers, a recognised halal certificate |
| Raw material | Own farms or contract growers; crop calendar; traceability to field |
| Freezing capacity | IQF tunnel capacity (tonnes/hour), cold store capacity, blast freezers |
| Lab testing | Pesticide residues, microbiology (e.g. Listeria, E. coli), foreign matter detection (metal detectors or X-ray) |
| Specification | Size/cut, defects, glaze, temperature at loading (-18°C or colder5) |
| Packaging | Retail bags vs. 10 kg cartons vs. bulk; private-label capability |
| Logistics | Reefer containers at -18°C or colder; data loggers; port of loading |
Practical tips:
- Visit or audit during the season of your product, not in the off-season, so you see the real line.
- Ask for a pre-shipment inspection with temperature probes and a sample cut test.
- Agree a temperature clause: the product's core temperature at loading and the reefer set point.
- Start with a mixed container of two or three items to test quality before scaling up.
Contract terms that avoid disputes
Frozen vegetable disputes usually come down to three things: quality at arrival, temperature and quantity. Write each one into the contract:
- Quality basis: say whether quality is judged at loading (by an agreed inspection company) or at destination, and how long the buyer has to file a claim.
- Temperature records: require the reefer data-logger file and set a clear rule for what happens if the record shows a break.
- Net weight and glaze: state net weight after glaze, and the method used to measure glaze.
- Shelf life: agree the production date range and the minimum remaining shelf life on arrival.
