Anyone looking for a frozen strawberry supplier in Egypt is shopping in the country's single largest processed-food export. Frozen strawberries led Egypt's food exports in January–July 2026 at $558 million, up 7% year on year, within a record $4.5 billion of total food exports for the period1. Egypt is described by the trade as the world's largest frozen strawberry exporter, at around 300,000 tons a year2. This guide covers where the fruit comes from, when it is packed, what a sound IQF specification looks like, and the EU compliance issue every buyer must plan for in 2026.
Why Egypt dominates frozen strawberries
Egypt is the world's third-largest strawberry producer, with output of around 688,000 tons from roughly 9,000 hectares in Qalyubia, Beheira, Ismailia and Sharqia2. Mild winters allow a long harvest, and a dense cluster of freezing plants turns most of the crop into IQF (individually quick frozen) fruit, purées and diced product for industrial users.

Europe's processors rely heavily on Egyptian fruit. In 2025 Egypt shipped a record 62,200 tons of frozen strawberries to Poland, worth more than $76 million and 2.2 times the 2024 volume, giving Egypt 73.6% of Poland's frozen strawberry imports3. Poland's own crop was hit by frost in May 2025, and processors there use Egyptian fruit both for their own supply contracts and for re-export3. Other key destinations include Germany, the Netherlands, China, Brazil, Turkey, Czechia, Hungary and Russia2.
Season and varieties
Egypt's strawberry season runs from December to June, with Fortuna, Festival and Sensation among the varieties processed2. Freezers buy fresh fruit throughout this period and then ship frozen stock year-round. Shipments to Poland, for example, peak between April and September, after the fruit has been frozen3.
| Month | Field and plant activity | What buyers should do |
|---|---|---|
| December – February | Early harvest, fresh exports dominate | Agree specs and annual volumes for the new crop |
| March – June | Main harvest, peak freezing | Inspect plants, take pre-shipment samples |
| April – September | Peak frozen shipments from stock | Call off contracted volumes and monitor lab results |
| October – November | Carry-over stock only | Expect tighter choice of calibrated grades |
Yields have become less predictable. Industry sources reported that acreage increased in 2026 while yield per hectare declined because of unstable weather2. Keep that in mind when you negotiate fixed prices for a full year.
IQF specification: what to put in writing
Frozen strawberries are a commodity only on the surface. Most disputes come from vague specifications. A workable spec sheet for Egyptian IQF fruit should cover:
- Product form: whole IQF, calibrated or uncalibrated; sliced; diced (state the cube size); or purée/crushed.
- Calibre: diameter range for calibrated fruit, with the percentage allowed outside the range.
- Variety and origin: variety if it matters to your process, and the growing governorate.
- Quality tolerances: maximum percentages of clusters, broken fruit, green or white shoulders, caps and stems, and foreign material.
- Sensory and chemical: colour, Brix and taste, plus pesticide residues to your destination's maximum residue levels (MRLs).
- Microbiology: limits agreed with your QA team, including the pathogens your market tests for.
- Packaging: carton or bag weight, liner, pallet pattern, labelling and lot coding.
- Storage and transport: -18°C or colder throughout, with temperature logs for the reefer container.
The benchmark most quoted in the trade is Strawberry IQF Uncalibrated FOB Egypt. Expana put it at $1,150 per ton on 30 April 2026 and $1,200 per ton on 31 July 202656. Calibrated and premium grades trade above that level.
The 2026 compliance issue: EU border checks
The most important change for buyers this year is regulatory. In January 2026 the European Commission added strawberries from Egypt (fresh, chilled or frozen, CN 0810 10 00 and 0811 10) to Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1793. Since then, 20% of consignments face identity and physical checks for pesticide residues at EU border control posts4. The Commission cited RASFF notifications and member-state control data pointing to "new risks for human health" from possible pesticide residues4.
The commercial effect has been visible. Exporters reported multiple EU rejections, a shift of some fruit to the domestic market and to Russia and Latin America, and a sluggish market with uneven quality5. By August 2026, the trade said rejections were "directly curtailing demand" at EU borders6. At the same time, costs rose: electricity for refrigeration was up 15–20%, packaging up 25–30%, and Red Sea disruption added freight and insurance surcharges56.
For an EU buyer, this means:
- Demand a pre-shipment multi-residue analysis from an accredited lab for every lot, not a seasonal certificate.
- Ask for the supplier's EU notification and rejection history over the last two seasons.
- Contract who pays for detention, re-testing and destruction if a lot is held at the border.
- Favour suppliers with grower-level traceability and spray records, not only plant-level certificates.
Buyers outside the EU should still apply the same discipline. Residue problems in one market quickly affect a supplier's reputation in others.
Supplier due diligence checklist
Before you sign an annual contract with an Egyptian freezer, confirm:
- Food safety certification: BRCGS, IFS or FSSC 22000 at the freezing plant, and GLOBALG.A.P. at the source farms if your customers require it. Verify each certificate on the scheme's public database.
- Export registration: the company's export registration and the plant's approval for food exports.
- Capacity: freezing capacity per day, cold-storage space and how much fruit comes from the company's own farms versus purchased fruit.
- Lab programme: which accredited labs they use, how often they test, and whether results are shared lot by lot.
- Track record: references from buyers in your region and recent container-level shipping history.
- Contract terms: Incoterm, payment security, claims procedure and a price-review mechanism, given cost volatility.
Egypt shipped 64,000 tons of fresh strawberries in 2025 alongside its frozen trade7, so many groups run both fresh and frozen lines. Ask which product your volumes will come from. For the paperwork side of buying from Egypt, see our buyer's guide to importing from Egypt.
How Egypt Rise helps buyers find frozen fruit suppliers
Egypt Rise is a free, bilingual B2B platform where Egyptian producers publish export catalogues with HS codes, minimum order quantities, capacity, certificates and Incoterms. Buyers contact suppliers directly, and the platform charges no commission.
- Search the product catalogue for frozen strawberries (HS 0811.10) and compare stated capacity and certifications.
- Browse farms and packhouses and cold stores to find integrated growers and freezers.
- If you also buy frozen vegetables, see our guide to Egyptian frozen vegetables and IQF products.
Listings are supplier-declared. Always verify certificates and test results independently before you place an order.
