Buyers looking for Egyptian herbs suppliers are tapping one of the oldest botanical traditions in the world and one of Europe's most important sources of seed spices and dried herbs. Egypt is Europe's leading supplier of seeds such as anise and caraway, shipping 6,474 tons in 2024, and it dominates European imports of organic-certified miscellaneous herbs with more than 80% of supply2. The sector earns nearly $200 million a year and exports about 85% of what it grows to more than 100 countries1. This guide covers what Egypt supplies, where it grows, the EU limits that decide whether a lot clears, and how to qualify a supplier.
A sector built for export
Egypt's medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are grown on about 125,000 acres, and the government aims to double this to 250,000 acres by 2030 under its Sustainable Agricultural Development Strategy1. Unlike most crops, herbs are grown mainly for foreign buyers.
| Indicator | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Annual export revenue | Nearly $200 million | Xinhua1 |
| Share of production exported | ~85% | Xinhua1 |
| Cultivated area | ~125,000 acres (target 250,000 by 2030) | Xinhua1 |
| Seed spices to Europe (anise, badian, caraway; with juniper) | 6,474 tons in 2024, Europe's leading supplier | CBI2 |
| Miscellaneous spices and herbs to Europe | 5,135 tons in 2024, 21.0% CAGR 2020–2024 | CBI2 |
| Organic miscellaneous herbs to Europe | 680 tons in 2024, over 80% of EU imports | CBI2 |
| Rank among non-EU suppliers of medicinal and aromatic plants to Europe | 4th (3.6% of import value, 2023) | CBI3 |
Egypt's imports into Europe of medicinal and aromatic plants grew by an average of 7.4% a year between 2019 and 20233. Herbs sit within a wider processed-food export base that reached a record $4.5 billion in January–July 20267.
What Egypt supplies
The core Egyptian range covers four groups:
- Herbal tea flowers and leaves: chamomile, hibiscus, mint, lemongrass and moringa13.
- Culinary herbs: basil, marjoram, parsley, dill, thyme and oregano-type herbs, sold as cut-and-sifted grades, rubbed or powder.
- Seed spices: anise, caraway, fennel, coriander and cumin. Anise and caraway are where Egypt leads the European market2. China has become an important buyer of Egyptian fennel1.
- Other botanicals: wormwood and specialty items for the extract and fragrance trade1, plus essential oils produced by some processors.
Where it grows
Production is concentrated in the Nile Valley south of Cairo. Fayoum is described as the country's hub for botanical agriculture1, and chamomile production centres on the Fayoum, Beni Suef and Minya belt6. Most herbs are grown by smallholders and collected by processors who clean, dry, cut, sift and sterilise the product before export.
Price reference
Herb prices are quoted mostly FOB Cairo or Alexandria, in euros per kilo. In April 2026, trade reporting put conventional Egyptian chamomile flowers at €2.20–2.30/kg and premium whole flowers at €3.35–3.45/kg FOB Cairo, with comfortable supply and modest demand6. Treat any quote as a starting point. Grade, organic status and testing obligations change the price more than the headline product name.
The EU standards that decide your shipment
European importers seldom reject Egyptian herbs for flavour. They reject them for contaminants. Three areas need to be in your contract.
1. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs)
PAs come from weeds harvested with the crop. The EU set maximum levels in Regulation (EU) 2020/2040, which has applied since 1 July 20225. The limits most relevant to Egyptian products are:
| Product (dried) | EU maximum level, µg/kg | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Herbal infusions, general | 200 | Reg. (EU) 2020/20405 |
| Chamomile, anise, peppermint, thyme, lemon balm and lemon verbena infusions | 400 | Reg. (EU) 2020/20405 |
| Dried herbs, general | 400 | Reg. (EU) 2020/20405 |
| Borage, lovage, marjoram and oregano | 1,000 | Reg. (EU) 2020/20405 |
| Cumin seeds | 400 | Reg. (EU) 2020/20405, CBI4 |
The limits refer to the sum of 21 specified PAs5. Ask for a PA analysis for every lot of chamomile, marjoram and other leafy herbs, and make weed control in the field part of your supplier audit.
2. Pesticide residues
EU maximum residue levels apply to every herb and spice, and buyers are directed to the EU pesticide database for the limit for each substance3. For cumin, chlorpyrifos residues above the 0.01 mg/kg MRL are the most frequent reason for border rejections4. CBI also notes that Egypt faces recurring pesticide issues and reliance on Nile water that is not always clean3. Multi-residue testing by an accredited lab is the minimum.
3. Microbiology
Seed spices and herbs must be free of Salmonella; for cumin, CBI describes this as a zero-tolerance requirement4. Ask how the supplier reduces microbial load, for example through steam sterilisation, and whether that treatment is accepted by your customers.
Supplier checklist
Before you approve an Egyptian herb supplier, check:
- Product specification: botanical name, plant part, grade (whole, cut-and-sifted, tea-bag cut or powder), moisture, volatile oil content where relevant, and the maximum admixture and foreign matter.
- Testing: lot-level certificates for PAs, pesticide residues and microbiology from an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
- Traceability: whether the supplier can trace each lot to a farm group, and whether it runs grower training on spraying and weed control.
- Certification: organic certification for the EU or US if you buy organic, which is Egypt's strongest segment2, and HACCP, ISO 22000 or a GFSI-recognised standard at the plant.
- Processing capacity: cleaning, metal detection, sterilisation, and storage that protects against pests and humidity.
- Commercial terms: Incoterm, payment security, sample approval process and a clear claims procedure if a lot fails testing at destination.

How Egypt Rise helps buyers source herbs and spices
Egypt Rise is a free, bilingual B2B platform where Egyptian farms and processors publish export catalogues with HS codes, minimum order quantities, capacity, certificates and accepted Incoterms. Buyers contact suppliers directly, with no commission.
- Search the product catalogue for chamomile and other plants for infusions (HS 1211.90), seed spices (HS 0909) and dried herbs, and filter by certification.
- Browse farms and processors in Fayoum, Beni Suef and Minya through the governorates guide.
- If you also buy for halal-certified food lines, see our guide to halal food from Egypt.
Listings are supplier-declared. Verify lab reports and certificates independently before ordering.
