If you are looking for an Egyptian oranges exporter for the 2026/27 campaign, you are buying from the market leader: Egypt shipped more than 2.2 million tons of citrus in 2025 and was the world's largest orange exporter for the sixth consecutive year, ahead of Spain and South Africa1. That scale is an advantage for buyers, but it also means quality, timing and compliance vary widely from one supplier to the next. This guide explains what Egypt grows, when each variety ships, which controls your market applies, and how to qualify a packer before the first container leaves Alexandria.

Egypt's orange sector in numbers

Egypt's oranges are grown from the Delta down the Nile Valley, and output recovered strongly in the 2025/26 marketing year. The USDA's Cairo office forecast production of about 4 million tons, up roughly 15% on the previous year, with exports of 1.9 million tons, domestic consumption of 1.2 million tons and around 900,000 tons going to processing2. Industry reporting at the end of the campaign confirmed exports of 1.9 million tons against 1.8 million tons the season before, shipped to more than 124 countries3.

The top destinations listed by the USDA are the EU-27, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the UAE, the United Kingdom, India, Bangladesh, Brazil and Canada2. In 2025 Egyptian citrus also reached new markets including the Philippines, Australia and Venezuela1.

Varieties: Valencia leads, Navel is early, Baladi is local

Valencia is the backbone of the Egyptian export programme, accounting for about 85% of orange output27. Other varieties grown include Navel, Baladi, Blood, Khalily and Sukkari oranges2.

  • Valencia (late, summer orange): the main export product, valued for juice content and Brix. European buyers generally prefer it, and late-season Egyptian Valencias compete against early South African fruit through June45.
  • Navel (early and late selections): the opening variety of the season, mostly seedless and sold for fresh consumption. It has a short commercial window and is exposed to competition from other origins24.
  • Baladi and specialty types (Blood, Khalily, Sukkari): grown mainly for the domestic market and selected regional buyers. Ask for availability in advance rather than assuming export volumes.

Season calendar for buyers

The harvest typically starts in late November and can run into September depending on variety, with cold storage extending the export window2. In 2025/26 one exporter shipped from week 50 of 2025 to week 20 of 2026, with peak activity from February to April, Navels from mid-December to April and Valencias continuing into late-season markets3. By late June 2026, about 90% of the Valencia programme had been shipped5.

PeriodWhat shipsNotes for buyers
Mid-December – FebruaryNavelShort window. In 2025/26 colouring was late and the effective export window was only about 25 days4
January – FebruaryEarly Valencia volumes beginEarly Valencias can overlap with Navels and take share from them4
February – AprilValencia peakMain shipping peak for most packers3
May – JulyLate Valencia, often from cold storeCompetes with early Southern Hemisphere fruit; juice content and Brix matter most5

Treat these windows as a planning range, not a guarantee. Weather moves colouring and maturity by weeks, so agree programme start dates with a tolerance clause.

Compliance: what your market checks

European Union. Egyptian oranges have been subject to increased EU border controls for pesticide residues since July 2022. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/194, adopted on 28 January 2026, cut the frequency of identity and physical checks from 20% to 10% of consignments, citing improved compliance6. Ten per cent is still a real risk: build MRL testing into your contract and require a recent multi-residue report from an accredited laboratory for each lot.

Traceability in Egypt. Only registered farms and packhouses that meet the authorities' requirements are eligible to export, and the government operates a system for registering, coding and monitoring farms2. The Ministry of Agriculture has also highlighted traceability coding as a priority for the citrus sector1. Ask every supplier for the farm and packhouse codes behind your lot.

Private standards. Large European retail programmes usually require GLOBALG.A.P. at farm level and a GFSI-recognised standard or ISO 22000/HACCP at the packhouse. Exporters that serve these channels advertise exactly this combination3. Gulf and Asian buyers may ask for less, but certificates still reduce disputes.

Cold chain. Reefer containers are typically run at around 4°C ±1°C, and the main export ports are Alexandria, Damietta and Port Said3. Some destinations require cold treatment protocols, so confirm your market's phytosanitary conditions before contracting.

How to qualify an Egyptian orange supplier

Use this checklist before you commit to a seasonal programme:

  1. Packhouse registration and codes: written confirmation that the packhouse and source farms are registered for export, with their codes2.
  2. Certificates: valid GLOBALG.A.P. (check the GGN on the public database) and the packhouse food-safety certificate, with scope and expiry dates.
  3. Residue history: last season's lab reports for your market's MRLs, and the supplier's own EU rejection or notification history.
  4. Specification sheet: variety, size counts per carton, colour, Brix and juice percentage, defect tolerances, carton type and pallet configuration.
  5. Programme capacity: weekly volumes they can commit for your window, and whether late fruit will come from cold storage.
  6. Logistics: port of loading, reefer settings, pre-cooling practice and transit time to your port.
  7. Commercial terms: Incoterm (FOB Alexandria is common for fresh produce), payment security and a clear claims procedure with photo and temperature evidence.

Watch the market signals

Prices and availability move with the season. In 2025/26 many growers held Navel fruit hoping for higher prices and were left with unsold stock, while Valencia demand stayed strong because Spanish supply was limited and smaller in size4. Packers also said the sector planned the season more carefully than before, with more realistic production and export forecasts5. Buyers who book Valencia programmes early and keep Navel volumes flexible are usually better protected.

How Egypt Rise helps buyers source oranges

Egypt Rise is a free, bilingual B2B platform where Egyptian farms, packhouses and cold stores publish export catalogues with HS codes, minimum order quantities, capacity, certificates and accepted Incoterms. Buyers contact suppliers directly, with no commission.

  • Browse packhouses and cold stores and farms to build a shortlist by governorate and certification.
  • Search the product catalogue for fresh citrus listings (HS 0805.10 for oranges) and compare stated capacity and certificates.
  • If you also work with Arabic-speaking growers, our Arabic guide to Egyptian citrus exports covers the same season from the farm side.

Always verify certificates and registrations directly with the issuing body before you pay a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Egyptian orange season?

Which Egyptian orange variety is best for export?

Valencia, which makes up about 85% of output and is preferred by European buyers for juice content and Brix24. Navel suits early-season fresh programmes but has a short window.

How strict are EU controls on Egyptian oranges?

Since February 2026, 10% of Egyptian orange consignments entering the EU are subject to identity and physical checks for pesticide residues, down from 20%6. Lot-level residue testing remains essential.

How much do Egypt's orange exports amount to?

About 1.9 million tons in the 2025/26 season, to more than 124 countries3. Total citrus exports exceeded 2.2 million tons in calendar year 20251.
